Choose the right floor for the room

01 December 2015

Choosing flooring isn't easy. There are many kinds of flooring to choose from and once you've chosen flooring, you have to decide what design you want. Nor does it get any easier knowing that the floor will be there for a long time. Of course, you want to be sure to make the right choice.

"We recommend you to begin by thinking functionally. What kind of room is involved? Will the floor be laid on the first storey or second? Or is it a room with a high level of humidity, for instance?" says Oke Nollet, Design Director at Pergo.

Flooring for humid rooms

In rooms like a kitchen, hallway or laundry room where the humidity is high and there are also a lot of water spills, you shouldn't choose a carpet. Solid wood floors are also not to recommend as they are sensitive to moisture. Excellent flooring for this kind of environment are instead vinyl, laminate, clinker or stone. If you want to have the feeling of wood flooring or stone, vinyl or laminate is perfect. You will get a natural look at the same time that the floor is warm and pleasant – in contrast to clinker and stone. Both vinyl and laminate are also water-resistant and very easy to lay thanks to Pergo's easy click function.

Flooring for children's rooms or playrooms

Vinyl is also a perfect choice for children's rooms and playrooms. Vinyl floors are soft, which means that small children who fall when they play don't get as hurt as they would have if it were solid wood flooring. In buildings with two storeys, the bedrooms are also usually on the top floor – then vinyl is also a very good choice since the floor doesn't reflect noise.

Choice of flooring also about feeling

Of course, you can't just think functionality when choosing a floor. You're going to live with your new floor for many years to come. The material and appearance you prefer is very personal, after all.

"We at Pergo always follow the latest interior design trends and make floors that give you that real feeling," says Oke Nollet. "Now, for instance, materials are popular that have an industrial character and wood floors are making a comeback. With our parquet floors, laminate floors and vinyl floors, we have something for every taste - at the same time that the floors work in real life with mischievous children, high heels and cold winter days."
